Warsaw, a socialist realism bas-relief in the MDM district

Warsaw

a city almost completely destroyed by the Nazi occupiers during World War II, was rebuilt thanks to the efforts of the entire nation. At first, the reconstruction mainly consisted in clearing the debris from the streets and repairing less damaged buildings. Over time, however, planners and architects began to draft plans of the new capital city, meant to be a model for the whole socialist homeland; an agglomeration, which could be created almost from scratch, without any restrictions, except for the guidelines of the new socialist realism style, also called in the "newspeak": “socrealism”.

We invite you to visit Warsaw path of socialist realism.

Do you want to discover what large cities behind the Iron Curtain were to look like?

Warsaw, the Palace of Culture and ScienceLearn how many bricks the tallest and largest Polish building, located on the largest square in Europe, bearing in the past the name of Joseph Stalin, consists of?

Visit a housing estate built one and a half meters above the city level on the ruins of the former ghetto destroyed by the Nazis, on the basis of the English garden-city concept, where monumental gates lead to?

Smile at the irony of fate the former "Party House" – the seat of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party (KC PZPR), whose construction was covered from mandatory subscriptions distributed among the whole population, which in 1991 became a Banking and Financial Centre?

Enjoy the charm of the impracticality of be the tallest monumental colonnade in Warsaw, situated at the height of the second floor?

Admire the block simplicity of a massive hotel meant to be accommodation for the ministries’ visitors, whose roof was planned to be a heliport (however, due to a poor construction, a helicopter landed there only twice: for the first and last time)?

See the monumental buildings constructed as a reminiscent of the Place Vendome in Paris?
